Tarmac Driveway Cost Calculator

What does a new tarmac driveway cost in Newcastle, Northumberland and the wider North East? As an initial guide, our tarmac driveway installations are priced from approximately £120 per m², with projects starting from £3,250, subject to the construction requirements and size of the area.

The cost of resurfacing an existing driveway is not necessarily the same as replacing it completely. Where the existing foundations are sound and suitable, resurfacing may require less preparation. A full-depth replacement can involve removing old concrete or asphalt, excavating to the required level, installing and compacting a suitable sub-base, providing secure edging and constructing new asphalt layers.

At W Miller & Sons, we specialise in professionally machine-laid tarmac and asphalt driveways. Depending on the project specification, our construction can include an AC20 asphalt base course and an AC10 wearing course or another suitable specified surface finish, carefully compacted to provide a durable entrance for regular vehicle use.

Driveway size, existing levels, drainage, kerbs, difficult access and the amount of preparation required can all influence the final installation price. Larger entrances can also have different costs per square metre because fixed site costs are spread across a greater area.

Use our tarmac driveway cost calculator to obtain a guide estimate by selecting Driveway, choosing Tarmac and entering the approximate area in square metres.

Following a free survey, we will assess the existing construction and explain the recommended installation before providing a detailed written quotation. Our experienced in-house team carries out the work, with no deposit required.

What Our Clients Say

Tarmac Driveways

FAQs

W Miller & Sons’ professionally installed tarmac driveways start at £120 per m², subject to a £3,250 minimum project price. Size, excavation, drainage, edging, access and whether the work is resurfacing or full reconstruction affect the final cost. Our free survey establishes the required groundwork and asphalt specification before we provide a quotation.

No deposit is required. We agree the specification and quotation before work begins, and the agreed balance is payable on completion. New driveway installations are backed by our 10-year workmanship guarantee. All installation work is carried out by our own experienced team.

A typical domestic tarmac driveway takes approximately 2–4 working days, depending on the area and groundwork. A full installation can include removing old surfacing, excavating, compacting the sub-base, installing drainage and edges, then laying and rolling the asphalt. Larger jobs or difficult ground conditions may need longer.

A durable tarmac driveway needs stable foundations, properly specified asphalt and effective compaction. A typical W Miller & Sons installation uses a compacted Type 1 MOT sub-base, suitable edging and machine-laid asphalt. Depending on the design, we may use an AC20 base course with an AC10 wearing course, or an appropriate stone mastic asphalt (SMA) finish. Layer depths and materials are selected for the ground conditions and vehicle loads rather than treated as one fixed specification for every site.

In everyday UK driveway terminology, tarmac usually means modern bitumen-bound asphalt. Historic tar-bound macadam used tar; contemporary driveway mixes use bitumen as the binder. What matters most is the specified asphalt mix, supporting foundations, drainage and professional laying and rolling. We explain the proposed base and wearing courses in the quotation.

Pedestrian access is normally possible after the asphalt has cooled sufficiently and our team confirms it is safe. Vehicle access commonly requires at least 24–48 hours, depending on the mix and weather. Avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary, heavy point loads and repeated sharp turns during the early period. Hot weather can prolong the time before normal vehicle use is advisable; we provide site-specific aftercare advice.

Sometimes. An existing asphalt or concrete base may be suitable for an overlay if it is sound, stable and properly drained, with enough clearance at doors, drains and edges. Cracking, sinking or movement beneath the old surface can reappear through the new asphalt. Where foundations have failed, excavation and reconstruction are generally the more reliable option.

Common causes include poor sub-base preparation, inadequate compaction, water damage, ground movement, excessive loads and ageing. A new wearing course cannot correct an unstable foundation. We investigate the cause and recommend local repairs, resurfacing or reconstruction as appropriate, rather than relying on a cosmetic finish to conceal structural faults.

Bitumen becomes more pliable as temperatures rise, so dark asphalt exposed to strong sunlight can show temporary tyre marks, particularly soon after installation. Avoid stationary steering and concentrated loads during hot spells. Minor marks do not automatically indicate defective workmanship, but persistent ruts or pronounced deformation should be assessed.

.

A well-constructed tarmac driveway is relatively low-maintenance. Sweep away debris, keep drainage clear, deal with oil contamination promptly and investigate significant cracks before water reaches the supporting layers. Some older surfaces may benefit from suitable restoration coatings, but routine sealing is not necessary for every driveway.

For a domestic front garden in England, a traditional impermeable tarmac surface over 5 m² will generally need planning permission unless rainwater drains to a suitable permeable area within the property. Properly designed porous asphalt systems are different from conventional asphalt and require a matching free-draining construction. Additional restrictions may apply to some properties; the council should confirm any uncertainty.

A dropped kerb or pavement crossing requires separate permission from the local highways authority, and councils may require an approved contractor to carry out work on the public pavement. We can consider the driveway layout and vehicle access during the survey, but council approval and contractor authorisation must be confirmed before any highway work proceeds.

Yes, for suitable domestic and commercial projects. Asphalt can work well on larger driveways, car parks and private access routes because it can be machine-laid efficiently. The sub-base and asphalt layers must be designed for the expected traffic, especially where heavier vehicles will use the surface. Each project is surveyed and specified accordingly.

We provide tarmac and asphalt installations throughout Newcastle, Northumberland, North and South Tyneside, Gateshead, Wearside, the Tyne Valley and County Durham. This includes areas such as Gosforth, Cramlington, Ponteland, Wallsend, Morpeth, South Shields and Hexham. We offer free surveys and detailed quotations throughout our North East service area.
